Born the slave of a rare book dealer in Djibouti, Marque was taught to read so he'd stop bringing the wrong books to market. As a teen he was bought by a Somali scholar and offered freedom and work. They searched for the mythic pirate utopia, Libertalia, but never found it.

In Madagascar, the birthplace of African piracy, Marque broke his employment and joined a crew of pirates, but dissatisfied with their democratic process, he acquired his own ship.

In Yemen he embraced the revolutionary spirit of the Arab Spring, but kept the anarchist ideals of the pirates. He believes that the decentralization of African tribalism allows far more freedom than democracy, and would appear less barbaric if embraced by more civilized folk.
